Up Helly Aa 2005...

Tuesday 25th January saw the Lerwick Pipe Band play with a large band for this years Guizer Jarl, Peter Fraser and his squad of Vikings.

This years parade took a longer different route across Lerwick, with the band playing at various points throughout the morning.

The band led the Jarl Squad through the town from the Isleburgh Community Centre, picking up the galley "Pete's Dragon" along the way.

The band was joined by members of the Lerwick Brass Band mid morning where the two groups combined to perform a rendition of "Highland Cathedral" in front of a large audience that was gathered to view the galley, before its burning later on that day.

On a day when the sun shone for most of the procession, the members of the band then led the Junior Jarl Squad on a procession through the main street in Lerwick, before retiring to local hostelries for some "light refreshments."  A special thanks being due to Lerwick's latest Bar Baroc for their complimentary drinks!!

The band then reconvened in the evening to participate in the torchlit procession through the streets of Lerwick.  With nearly 1000 guizers carrying burning torches, members of the pipe band and brass band form up and march through the middle of the procession.

The Lerwick Pipe Band with 20 members and a visiting piper, then proceeded to play their last rendition of the day, with the bass drum played by Forbes Hogg adorning blue flashing lights in support of Northern Constabulary's anti drink-drive campaign.

This year, the end of the procession marked the end of Aileen Cartneys leadership of the band.  Aileen has decided to step down as pipe major with Iain Morrison, former pipe major once again taking the helm.  Members expressed their thanks to Aileen for all her work throughout her time as Pipe Major before heading off to participate in the celebrations throughout the night.
