A farewell performance for the P&O ferry St. Sunniva...

Monday 30th September saw the final sailing from Shetland of one of the islands' lifeline ferries, the P&O vessel m.v St. Sunniva, with Northlink Ferries taking over the route the following day.

The band met on what was a wet night at 6pm for tuning up, before pipe major Aileen Cartney, and piper Gussie Angus led a party of guests from the new terminal building at Holmsgarth, down to the quayside where the rest of the band were formed up.

The band then launched into a rendition of tunes in front of a large crowd who had gathered to see the boat depart, after playing a few sets, the band were joined by members of the Lerwick Brass Band who were also along for the farewell event.
 

A full Lerwick Jarl Squad were also in attendance, with some sailing to Aberdeen on the vessel.  As darkness fell, both bands played alternately, and at 7pm, the ropes were slipped, the final passenger carrying P&O vessel then left Shetland for its farewell voyage, escorted by the Lerwick lifeboat, to a rendition of "Highland Cathedral" by Lerwick Pipe Band, with accompanying foghorns provided from other vessels tied up nearby!
