A Farewell to a Lerwick Pipe Band member...

And so, the time is upon us when piper Alastair Coutts leaves these shores.

Alastair Coutts, a surgeon at the local hospital, departs Shetland on Friday 20th June, 2003 to take up a new post at Dr. Grays Hospital in Elgin.  Alastair, who has been resident in Shetland for seventeen years has been a member of the band for a considerable amount of time, armed with his bleeper at most practices, he has made a valuable contribution to the band.

In true Lerwick Pipe Band style, we held a send off for him in the Lounge Bar on Saturday 14th June, he leaves with the traditional departing gift, the "Smirk" cartoon (see across) and lets be honest, what else could you give a piper surgeon!

The evening started at 7.30pm with a sensible few drinks, and things really kicked off from there, I will not write down too much in order to protect the not so innocent, but with over a dozen band members inhabiting the bar until the "wee small hours" the results can be seen below - not for the faint hearted!
