Lerwick Pipe Band takes its place on the World Wide Web...

Lerwick Royal British Legion Pipe Band becomes the latest of a growing list of pipe bands across the globe to go online with the launch of its new website - www.lerwickpipeband.com. The band, which is based in the Shetland Islands, is the most Northerly situated pipe band in the United Kingdom.

Commenting on the launch of the website, pipe major Aileen Cartney said "We are very pleased with the launch of the site, it is an important development for the band, and is intended to increase our profile, both locally and on an international footing."

Steven Guthrie, a piper with the band, who put the site together added "We felt it was time to get a presence online, a large number of pipe bands are now on the web, and we felt it was time we joined them."

Although the Highland Bagpipe is not a native instrument to Shetland, the band, which has been in existence since 1984, presently  has 19 pipers and 11 drummers in its ranks.  Lerwick Pipe Band does not compete, but members enjoy a varied programme of engagements throughout the year, ranging from local gala days to the internationally acclaimed Lerwick Up-Helly AA procession.

The launch of the website provides a new medium for the band to increase its profile.  By browsing the site, visitors can hear the band play, buy a CD, check availability of the band for an event, or simply find out more about the origins of the band.
