About the Band...

Lerwick Royal British Legion Pipe Band, is the number one (and only!) Pipe Band in the Shetland Islands and the most northerly situated band in the UK.

Based in Shetland, an archipelago of over 100 islands, 200 miles North East of Aberdeen in Scotland.  The band has been in existence in its present form since 1984 .It was originally formed in 1933 ,please see
history page.

The band plays at a wide range of events throughout the course of a year, from local gala days and agricultural shows, through to the internationally acclaimed up-helly-aa procession in January each year.  In the past few years, members of the band have travelled and played in locations from Norway to New York, with an annual trip to Edinburgh for the Princes Street Parade involving many bands.  (The trip to Edinburgh being further to travel than the trip to Norway!)

The band uniform consists of black jackets, and kilts in the Ancient Caledonian tartan.  The band has also been affiliated to the Lerwick Branch of Royal British Legion Scotland since 1994.

Membership presently stands at 13 pipers and 11 drummers, and the band actively welcomes any new members, there are presently several people learning the pipes within the band membership.  If you presently play, or are interested in learning to play, please contact the band.

The band welcomes visitors (playing or not) to its practices at the Lerwick British Legion, on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm.

The band gratefully acknowledges the assistance and support given by the Lerwick Branch of The Royal British Legion Scotland.
